Dramatic painterly floral are very important this season but it’s a modern, abstract and graphic interpretation of traditional florals – our elegant printed linen dress (left), for example, owes more to Jackson Pollock than Laura Ashley.

Strong colours are used in ‘blocks’ this Summer. Set a flame red jacket against a pair of white trousers for a high contrast look, as below, or combine complimentary tones with contrasting textures. A geometric striped knit, looks incredibly sophisticated in combination with a plain background colour. The key is to keep it clean.

We love this year’s summery stripes. They really help to lift your outfit and your mood. There are no rules, other than to think of it in terms of colour blocking avoid clutter – one striped top is enough to create a lasting impression.

Black and white or navy and white, it doesn’t matter, the classic monochrome colour scheme is as fashionable as ever. It’s sophisticated, chic and timeless. You can go down the printed route, as in our slinky Arabella printed jersey dress, right, or simply contrast a black top against white trousers, or vice versa.

Linen is always a great choice for summer, only this year it has a soft, sun-bleached quality. Our favourite summer skirt is this colour-blocked linen skirt, left, and this belted linen jacket with exquisite chevron pleating is a fantastically versatile piece you can dress up or down.
