Mother’s Day gifts that every mum will love
Everyone knows that their mum is one in a million and Mother’s Day is your chance to show just how much you care. From little gestures that mean a lot to luxurious treats, our ideas for gifts this Mother’s Day are sure to put a smile on the face of one very special lady.
1. The thoughtful little things that mean a lot
These days, huge advertising campaigns and slick in-store promotions in the run up to Mother’s Day can ramp up the pressure we feel to spend more and more (and sometimes more than we can really afford) on the perfect Mother’s Day gifts. And if you are on a budget, if can sometimes feel as if you will never be able to keep up with the high rollers when it comes to treating your mum.
But doing a little something that makes your mother feel truly appreciated doesn’t have to break the bank. And sometimes it’s the thoughtful gesture which costs nothing that can make a mum feel like a million dollars.
Interestingly, in 2018 Mumsnet conducted a survey amongst UK women to ask what it was that they really, really wanted for Mother’s Day – and the results may surprise you. Top of mums’ lists were “a lie-in”, “a handmade card” and “a nice meal cooked for me”.
Which just goes to show, when it comes to finding the perfect present for Mother’s Day, little things really do mean a lot.
2. Days out with Mum: making wonderful memories
These days, more and more people are choosing to gift “experiences” rather than giving traditional presents. And this seems to chime with the growing popularity of gift ideas that are about time together and making wonderful memories.
Several studies report that the majority of women say that they would prefer to spend Mother’s Day doing something special with the people they love, rather than receiving a gift.
We’re big fans of a great day out and here are some of our favourite tried and trusted ideas for making your next Mothering Sunday a day to remember:
- Take mum out for a traditional afternoon tea with finger sandwiches, scones and cakes and beautiful vintage china for a stylish alternative to a Sunday roast in a restaurant. And if there is a glass of fizz on offer too, so much the better!
- Visit a place that it special to your mum, be it a local beauty spot, a favourite walk or a historical site – or somewhere else that you know she loves. Stroll around, spend time there and enjoy it together.
- If she has ever said “I’ve always wanted to…”, Mother’s Day is the ideal day to make this happen. Whether it’s line-dancing, wing-walking or taking an art class, get her a voucher so she can finally give it a go.
3. Personalised Mother’s Day gifts: show her that you know her
Personalising a Mother’s Day present is a lovely touch and it will mean a lot. If you are naturally creative, designing and decorating a card just for her, rather than buying one off the shelf, is a great way to show her that you know her.
If you’re a little less confident in your own artistic talents when it comes to making a card, there are many options for getting an expert to do the tricky bits for you! Lots of websites will allow you to upload favourite photos and personalised greetings and will design and print a card professionally and send it by post to arrive in time for Mother’s Day.
Choosing and framing a special photo is also a lovely choice of gift – and very personal – present idea. With so many images captured digitally on phones and computers these days, a nicely-framed picture in pride of place is guaranteed to be a hit.
Adding a personal touch to a traditional gift is also a great idea. Whether handmade or shop-bought, adding a name, a favourite picture or a special message to a picture frame, jewellery or a mug is sure to make all the difference on the day.
4. Say it with flowers
It just wouldn’t be Mother’s Day without a bunch of bright and beautiful flowers. Fresh blooms are an ever-popular choice as a gift on Mother’s Day, and rightly so. Whether they are hand-picked from your own garden or delivered to the door in a beautiful arrangement, flowers are guaranteed to bring a smile to every mum’s face.
With so many options to choose from, here are some of our favourite flowers traditionally associated with Mother’s Day:
Roses: beautiful and sweet-smelling, the classic choice for a special lady.
Tulips: fresh, bright and seasonal, tulips are available in pretty much any colour and look gorgeous. The perfect option for an easy-going mum who loves nature.
Lilies: big, beautiful and elegant with a gorgeous fragrance, lilies make a striking statement around the house. Just a word of warning, these are not an option for cat-loving homes as certain varieties of lilies are toxic to cats.
Daffodils: so bright and cheerful and widely available at this time of year, they are the perfect choice to brighten up the day.
When it comes to getting the ideal Mother’s Day gift, there are so many options to choose from – but it’s important to remember that the biggest budget doesn’t always guarantee the best present. A thoughtful gesture, a chance to make wonderful memories for the future and the personal touch will often mean so much more. So however you celebrate Mother’s Day and whatever you get for her, have a wonderful day!
