Tunics for women: truly timeless tops in a variety of styles
Tunics are still trendy, despite being around for ages, quite literally. Back in Roman times the versatile garment was the basic item for women‘s wardrobe. And to this day, tunics for women have never gone out of fashion. Quite understandably because the loose, long shirt blouses are so very comfortable and at the same time available in a multitude of styles from bohemian or vintage to classic.
Tunics for women are simply a must-have. The versatile tops work well in formal settings and for casual occasions. Their flattering, loose cut suits slender and curvy women alike, and allows for a wide range of styles.
Comfortable tunic tops in bold colours or floral prints are made for summer days in the city or summer nights at the beach club. But a tunic looks just as good in restrained pastels, elegant materials and with a sophisticated touch to the neckline or hem – not to mention embroidery or sparkly embellishments like beads and sequins fit for an evening out. At Artigiano, we‘ve never forgotten the ladies‘ tunic – instead, we‘ve always included it in our collections, ideally completed by a pair of jeans or stylish cropped trousers.
All tunic tops have one thing in common: they are loosely cut and very airy. Yet the basic design can be modified with many variations.
Sleeves: Tunics may be sleeveless to keep you cool on a warm day, designed with wide bat-wing sleeves for easy movement or trumpet sleeves for additional warmth on a cool summer evening or during a spring day.
Cut and neckline: The cut can be simply rectangular, or with an empire-style waistband below the bust. Irregular hemlines work well with this incredibly varied item, as do wraparound cuts. Necklines vary from V-shaped to Carmen cuts, but in any case a tunic is easily thrown on.
Colours and decorations: These are entirely up to personal tastes, with every imaginable design available. Floral prints for the first days of spring, elegant tunics in high quality fabrics with very restrained decorations and colours, lace trim or bead decorations around the neckline – tunics have it all.
And with Boho being all the rage, without a doubt this is the garment to wear! A tunic with slightly bohemian design will easily convey that vintage look for fans of retro fashion.
Tunics can do much more than the summery beach style. They‘ll let you be at ease in the office or allow you to shine at a party. Here are just a few styling ideas for some of the many models available.
For bright summer days and warm summer evenings a tunic with bright colours or ethnic patterns is an excellent choice. Another option is a romantic, flowery design complete with lace and beads. A short-sleeved tunic top will go well with shorts or cropped trousers and stylish, summery sandals.
Classic office wear
You can wear a tunic in the workplace! Choose restrained, plain colours like dark blue, grey or white. The neckline should not be too revealing or draw attention with too much decoration, a simple round neck is a good choice. Together with slim trousers, preferably black or dark grey, and elegant pumps you are all set to make a professional impression.
Seductive party style
A tunic is just the ticket for a party, since you‘ll be comfortable and able to move easily and thus enjoy yourself on the dance floor, all the while looking good! Shimmering, flowing fabrics or sequins and beads set the mood, together with leggings and sexy high heels.
Do you want to shine with restrained elegance during a truly festive event? A monochrome tunic combined with slim fabric trousers and pumps is guaranteed to turn heads and can be completed with eye-catching earrings or a necklace to enhance your neckline.
Tunics in winter
Yes, indeed – you don‘t have to fold away your tunic tops with the first falling leaves. Since ladies‘ tunics are loosely falling garments, you can easily wear a long-sleeved top under your favourite tunic and just go on wearing it, maybe with thermo lmeggings or jeans and a pair of boots. Ethnic patterns are especially suitable for this autumnal transformation!
As with any top or blouse, when your tunic has been worn or is stained, it needs to be washed. Most tunics can be put into the washing machine, but you should make sure and read the instructions on the label first.
Cotton or blended fabrics can usually be machine washed at 40°C. For coloured fabrics, use a colour detergent. Avoid using softener if the tunic contains elastics!
If your tunic can be machine washed but is decorated with ribbons, tassels or beads, turn it inside out and put it in a laundry net – using the delicate cycle with gentle spin.
Many tunics dry best on a clothes hanger, some don‘t even need ironing afterwards.
Very festive tunics with sequins and embroidery may require dry cleaning, or at least hand washing!
